Empathy & Respect: The Learning Focus

Empathy and respect involve considering another person’s experience while recognizing that it may differ from your own. Children can practice curiosity, inclusion, and boundaries without being expected to read minds.

A Practical Starting Point

Choose Understanding Others’ Feelings for perspective-taking, Respecting Differences for welcoming varied preferences and abilities, or Personal Space & Boundaries for asking and accepting limits. Use a fictional play scene and ask what someone might need, then discuss how to check rather than assume.

Choosing Appropriate Support

Do not require children to absorb another person’s distress or agree to unwanted contact to show care. Respect includes listening to a no and offering accessible ways to participate. Faces, clothing, or background do not reliably reveal what someone feels or wants. Keep the conversation specific and open to more than one explanation.

Choose a More Specific Learning Goal

  • Understanding Others’ Feelings: Discuss two possible feelings in a familiar situation and ask how someone could learn what another person actually feels.
  • Respecting Differences: Notice that peers may communicate, move, learn, or enjoy activities differently, and discuss welcoming responses.
  • Personal Space & Boundaries: Practice asking before touching someone or borrowing a personal item and respecting a clear no or stop.
