Social & Emotional Learning: The Learning Focus
Social and emotional learning explores feelings, identity, calming, relationships, and working through problems with adult support. A child’s response to a picture is a conversation starter, not a diagnosis or a complete measure of their behavior.
A Practical Starting Point
Choose Feelings & Emotions for recognizing and expressing emotions, Self-Awareness & Confidence for preferences and strengths, Self-Regulation & Calming for supported coping, Friendship & Cooperative Play for peer interaction, Empathy & Respect for considering others, or Social Problem Solving for disagreements. Select the immediate learning goal rather than treating every social scene as the same task.
Choosing Appropriate Support
Use fictional characters, allow children to pass, and respect different communication styles. No feeling needs to be labeled bad, though adults may need to stop unsafe actions. Practice in calm moments and connect pictures with responsive everyday support. Worksheets cannot replace relationships, supervision, or appropriate professional help when needed.
