Family Members: The Learning Focus

Family-member learning recognizes people who care for and matter to a child. Relationships may include parents, grandparents, siblings, foster or adoptive relatives, extended family, and other important caregivers.

A Practical Starting Point

Use an inclusive picture or invite children to draw people they consider family. Ask what these people do together or how they help one another, without assigning fixed jobs by gender. Offer a fictional household for children who prefer not to share personal information. Use the names and relationship words a family chooses.

Choosing Appropriate Support

Do not assume a household contains two parents, that everyone lives together, or that a child knows a particular relative. Avoid compulsory family-tree formats when they exclude real relationships. Keep questions gentle and optional. The learning goal is understanding caring relationships and varied family structures, not checking whether a family matches a template.

Distinguish Related Learning Goals

  • All About Me: Draw a self-portrait or choose favorite activities, foods, or colors with optional adult help.
  • My Home & Household: Match everyday household activities to familiar spaces, allowing for different types of homes.
  • Family Traditions: Draw or discuss a meaningful practice shared with trusted people, with room for different cultures and households.
