My Community: The Learning Focus

A community includes people, places, services, and connections that support everyday life. Children can explore these functions without memorizing job titles or assuming every neighborhood looks alike.

A Practical Starting Point

Use Community Helpers for what people do, Helpers’ Tools & Workplaces for job-related connections, Places in My Community for purposes of locations, or Community Transportation for ways people and goods travel. Begin with a familiar need, such as borrowing a book, and discuss the people and places involved.

Choosing Appropriate Support

Show varied people in different roles and avoid treating uniforms as proof that someone is safe to approach alone. Some services look different or are accessed remotely. Keep examples grounded in a child’s community while explaining alternatives. The subject is how shared life works, rather than a random collection of occupation vocabulary.

Choose a More Specific Learning Goal

  • Community Helpers: Match a familiar community helper with the work they do, using inclusive people and accurate everyday examples.
  • Helpers’ Tools & Workplaces: Connect a community worker with an appropriate tool or place of work using clear visual examples.
  • Places in My Community: Match a neighborhood location with an everyday purpose, such as borrowing books, receiving care, or playing outside.
  • Community Transportation: Match everyday vehicles with their uses, such as a bus for passengers or an ambulance for emergency transport.
