Science: The Learning Focus
Preschool science begins with noticing the world, asking questions, and comparing observations. Pictures can support that work, but an animal-themed counting page is not automatically a science activity; the learning goal needs to concern a real feature or phenomenon.
A Practical Starting Point
Choose Animals and Plants for living things, Human Body & Senses for observable body features and sensory experiences, Weather & Seasons for local conditions, Living Things & Environment for nature, or Materials & Motion for physical properties. Scientific Inquiry & Observation focuses on how children investigate and record what happens.
Choosing Appropriate Support
Start with a safe experience children can observe directly. Ask what they notice before supplying labels, and distinguish a prediction from a result. Use accurate illustrations when real examples are unavailable. Optional Space Awareness can follow a child’s interest without requiring memorized planet names or abstract astronomical explanations.
Choose a More Specific Learning Goal
- Animals: Choose an animal learning goal, from noticing wings or fins to matching young animals with adults or discussing where animals live.
- Plants: Explore how familiar plants are built, what supports their growth, and how a seed can develop into a young plant.
- Human Body & Senses: Browse body and senses topics, from identifying eyes and hands to observing safely with hearing, sight, and touch.
- Weather & Seasons: Choose a weather or seasons topic, from recognizing clouds to recording today’s weather and noticing day or night.
- Living Things & Environment: Explore the living world through picture sorting, noticing natural materials, and simple ways of caring for nature.
- Materials & Motion: Browse hands-on investigations of how familiar objects feel, move, float, and cast shadows with adult guidance.
- Scientific Inquiry & Observation: Browse beginner science-process activities for describing observations, choosing predictions, and representing actual findings.
- Space Awareness: Recognize familiar sky objects in clear pictures without requiring planet names, orbit models, or lunar phases.
