Completing & Extending Patterns: The Learning Focus
Extending a pattern uses an established repeating unit to decide what belongs in a missing or next position. A choice should fit the rule, not merely look attractive beside the other pictures.
A Practical Starting Point
Arrange leaf-flower-leaf-flower-leaf and ask what should come next. Invite the child to say the whole sequence and point to the repeating leaf-flower unit. After adding the next piece, read it again to check. Introduce an internal gap only after extending the end is comfortable.
Choosing Appropriate Support
Offer a small number of clear choices and retain enough of the sequence to reveal its rule. If a child makes a different choice, test it together against the repeat. Avoid ambiguous short rows that could support several patterns. Distinguish repeating patterns from number sequences that increase by one.
Distinguish Related Learning Goals
- Recognizing Repeating Patterns: Notice which short group of colors or shapes repeats across a row, starting with clear alternating examples.
- Copying & Creating Patterns: Copy an alternating picture sequence from a model, then choose shapes or colors to make a repeating pattern.
