One-to-One Correspondence: The Learning Focus
One-to-one correspondence coordinates each object with one spoken count word. It is the careful matching step within counting, rather than the ability to recite numbers quickly.
A Practical Starting Point
Line up three blocks and model moving one block for each number word. Invite the child to do the same, placing counted blocks in a separate area. A practical variation is setting one cup at each toy place setting. Keep the objects large and clearly separated so the pairing is visible.
Choosing Appropriate Support
If the child says two words while moving one object, slow down and model the movement again. Reduce the set before increasing its size or scattering the objects. Ask how many only after the matching process, and distinguish difficulty tracking items from difficulty knowing the spoken number sequence.
Distinguish Related Learning Goals
- Number Recognition: Recognize written numerals from zero through ten by finding a named digit among a few clear examples.
- Counting Sequence: Help children say number words in order and follow a simple counting pattern before counting larger object groups.
- Counting Objects: Count a small set of familiar pictured objects and explain how many there are using clear visual prompts.
