Number–Quantity Matching: The Learning Focus
Number–quantity matching connects a numeral with a group containing that many objects. It brings symbol recognition and counting together, while keeping the two steps visible.
A Practical Starting Point
Place numeral cards 1, 2, and 3 beside small groups of counters. Ask the child to count one group, say its total, and choose the matching card. Reverse the activity by selecting a numeral first and building the corresponding group. Include an empty group for zero only when the child is ready to discuss it.
Choosing Appropriate Support
Use similar-sized objects so picture size does not distract from amount. If a child counts correctly but selects the wrong symbol, provide numeral support rather than repeating the whole counting lesson. Do not ask for written digits when matching can be demonstrated by pointing or moving a card.
Distinguish Related Learning Goals
- Number Recognition: Recognize written numerals from zero through ten by finding a named digit among a few clear examples.
- Counting Sequence: Help children say number words in order and follow a simple counting pattern before counting larger object groups.
- Counting Objects: Count a small set of familiar pictured objects and explain how many there are using clear visual prompts.
