Number Order & Missing Numbers: The Learning Focus
Number order work concerns the positions of printed numerals in a counting sequence. Finding a missing symbol asks children to connect the spoken order they know with the written numbers they see.
A Practical Starting Point
Arrange cards 1, 2, 3, and 4, read them together, then remove one. Ask which card belongs in the gap and how the surrounding numbers help. Begin with a short familiar run before using a longer sequence or presenting cards out of order.
Choosing Appropriate Support
Keep a reference number line available when symbol recognition is still developing. A child may know the next spoken word but need help selecting its printed form. This task differs from ordinal position words such as first and last, which describe places in a lineup rather than the order of numeral symbols.
Distinguish Related Learning Goals
- Number Recognition: Recognize written numerals from zero through ten by finding a named digit among a few clear examples.
- Counting Sequence: Help children say number words in order and follow a simple counting pattern before counting larger object groups.
- Counting Objects: Count a small set of familiar pictured objects and explain how many there are using clear visual prompts.
