Comparing Quantities: The Learning Focus

Comparing quantities means deciding which group has more, fewer, or the same number of items. Amount is different from the physical size of each item or the space a group occupies.

A Practical Starting Point

Set out three large blocks and four smaller blocks. Match them in pairs to see which group has an item left over, then count to check. Discuss that the smaller objects can form the larger quantity. Begin with clearly different small groups before comparing close totals.

Choosing Appropriate Support

Use equal-sized counters initially if size distracts from the count. Align items or pair them rather than asking children to guess from a spread-out picture. Use ‘fewer’ for a smaller number of countable objects and welcome everyday language as a starting point. Keep measurement comparisons in the relevant Size & Measurement category.

Distinguish Related Learning Goals

  • Number Recognition: Recognize written numerals from zero through ten by finding a named digit among a few clear examples.
  • Counting Sequence: Help children say number words in order and follow a simple counting pattern before counting larger object groups.
  • Counting Objects: Count a small set of familiar pictured objects and explain how many there are using clear visual prompts.
