Joining Groups (Early Addition): The Learning Focus
Joining groups explores early addition through a visible action. Children combine two small sets and find the total, rather than simply naming an addition symbol.
A Practical Starting Point
Place two toy animals on one mat and one on another. Tell a short story in which they come together, physically move them, and ask how many are there altogether. Invite the child to count the combined group. Begin with totals around five or fewer, adjusting to the child’s readiness.
Choosing Appropriate Support
Use distinct starting groups so the change is easy to follow, then collect all items into one group. Do not insist on a counting-on strategy or written equation. Check that decorative pictures are not accidentally included in the total. The important relationship is that the new set includes both original groups.

- Taking Away Objects (Early Subtraction): Start with a few objects, take one or two away in a picture story, and count the objects still there.
