Simple Picture Graphs: The Learning Focus

A simple picture graph displays counts using repeated icons. At this level, one icon should represent one item or response, with aligned starting points so comparisons are meaningful.

A Practical Starting Point

Build two short rows of identical picture cards to show choices of apples or bananas. Name the categories, count each row, and ask which has more responses. Point out that a longer row means more only when icons and spacing follow the same scale. Ask the child to add one new response.

Choosing Appropriate Support

Use a small display with clear labels and no partial icons. Read category names aloud and accept pointing. Avoid scaled graphs in which one picture stands for several children until the child is ready for that additional idea. Discuss only what the recorded responses show, rather than guessing why everyone made a choice.

  • Counting & Recording Data: Count a few kinds of objects, then make a matching mark or place a picture to record the amount for each group.
