Counting & Recording Data: The Learning Focus

Recording data connects a counted group or response with a visible mark. One picture or simple mark can stand for one item without requiring formal tally bundles or written totals.

A Practical Starting Point

Sort a handful of large blocks into two color groups. Count one group, then draw one mark for each block beside its label. Compare the marks with the actual objects to check that none was missed. Repeat for the other group and discuss what was recorded.

Choosing Appropriate Support

Use a clear place for each category and keep the meaning of a mark consistent. An adult can draw while the child dictates or places tokens. Distinguish collecting and recording the information from interpreting an already completed graph. Never infer an exact count from a decorative illustration that does not specify its data.

Distinguish Related Learning Goals

  • Simple Picture Graphs: Read a picture graph showing a few favorite items and identify the category with the most, fewest, or equal counts.
