Letter Formation: The Learning Focus
Letter formation means making a recognizable alphabet symbol, rather than only pointing to one. Preschool children may explore large uppercase forms, familiar lowercase forms, or letters in a name, with support matched to their experience.
A Practical Starting Point
Demonstrate one letter on a large surface, naming it and showing a clear starting place. Invite the child to trace with a finger, then try a mark beside the model. For L, discuss the down stroke followed by the line across. Use one consistent model instead of mixing different printed styles within the same task.
Choosing Appropriate Support
Choose a generous writing space and only a few attempts. Treat a reversal or uneven stroke as information for your next demonstration, not a failure. If the child cannot yet copy a basic stroke comfortably, return to larger movement practice before demanding accurate letters. Recognizing a letter without writing it is still useful knowledge.
